International Driving Licenses
International Driving Licenses are valid in most countries that have approved the agreement on this issue. The only condition for obtaining an International Driving License is to be a tourist in that country and not to be a permanent resident. The USA is one of the few countries, which did not approve this agreement.
However, since individual states are responsible for traffic in the USA, some states accept International Driving Licenses and act tolerantly at traffic controls. Whereas other states produce their own local driving licenses but make life easy by not insisting on extra driving tests.
According to the financial legislation of the state, fees for International Driving Licenses are re-determined at the beginning of each year. Also, according to the same legislation, the stamp fee is reduced in cases where the applicant is applying for an International Driving License for the second time.
In order to benefit from this reduction the expired International Driving License should be returned to the Association, together with the applicant’s original driving license valid for at least one year and two recent photographs).
